How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

At least 5 percent of the portable toilets in each cluster must be accessible, and never fewer than 1 per cluster. This comes from section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards. A cluster of 10 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 25 needs 2, because 5 percent of 25 is 1.25, which rounds up.

From the manufacturer's Comfort XL listing. PolyJohn calls this model "wheelchair accessible." Whether a setup meets the ADA also depends on the ground, path and placement.

Where should a wheelchair-accessible unit be placed?

Place a wheelchair-accessible porta potty on firm, level ground on a clear path from the main event area. Grass, gravel and sand make wheelchair travel hard. The door swings out, so leave about 5 feet of flat clear space in front. A 62-inch-wide unit needs a gate wider than 62 inches.

  • Put it at the end of a row, not wedged between units.
  • Use a paved patio, driveway or plywood path when the event is on grass.
  • Keep cords, hoses and tent stakes off the route.
  • The holding tank is 33 gallons, smaller than a standard unit, so add service for long events.

Who rents accessible units in Oxnard?

Event organizers, churches, schools, city-permitted festivals and jobsites with a worker who uses a mobility aid are the main renters of accessible units. Families also rent one for a parent or grandparent who uses a walker. Caregivers like the extra floor space, which fits two people.

Pair the accessible unit with a hand-washing station set at a reachable height, and see our event porta potty planning page for full setups.

Accessible porta potty questions

Is a wheelchair-accessible porta potty the same as ADA-compliant?

Not always. The unit can be built for wheelchair access, but ADA compliance also depends on the route to it, the ground it sits on and how many are provided. We describe our unit the way the manufacturer does: wheelchair accessible.

Do I need an ADA porta potty for a backyard party?

A private party at your home usually has no legal requirement. Still, if any guest uses a wheelchair, walker or needs a caregiver, an accessible unit is the kind choice. Public events and permitted events usually require at least one.

Can anyone use the accessible unit?

Yes. Anyone can use it. At busy events, put a sign asking guests to leave it open for those who need it.

Does the accessible unit have a sink?

The Comfort XL comes with a hand-sanitizer dispenser. For running water, add a hand-washing station next to it.

Can I mix accessible and standard units in one order?

Yes. Most event orders do. One trip charge covers every unit going to the same address.
