What is inside a standard porta potty?
A standard porta potty has a toilet seat, a urinal, two rolls of toilet paper and a hand-sanitizer dispenser. The standard unit also has a mirror, a coat hook, a vent stack that pulls odor up and out, and a door latch that shows "occupied." The 60-gallon tank is treated with blue deodorizer.

How long does a standard porta potty last between cleanings?
One standard porta potty serves about 10 workers for a 40-hour week between cleanings. At a party, one standard unit handles about 50 guests for 4 hours. Heavy use, summer heat and many guests drinking beer fill the tank faster, so add units or service visits for those jobs.
| Use | One standard unit covers | When to add more |
|---|---|---|
| Construction crew | Up to 10 workers, weekly service | Add 1 unit or a second weekly service for 11–20 workers |
| Backyard party | About 50 guests for 4 hours | Add 1 unit for every 5 when alcohol is served |
| Farm crew | Up to 20 workers (Cal/OSHA minimum) | Move units as the crew moves past a 5-minute walk |
| Home remodel | A typical 2–4 person crew, weekly service | Ask for every-other-week service on light use |
Not sure? The porta potty calculator uses the same chart our dispatcher uses.
Where should a standard porta potty go?
Put a standard porta potty on flat ground about 4 by 4 feet, within 25 feet of where the service truck parks. The door needs room to swing open. Keep it off the sidewalk and street unless you have a city permit. Shade helps on hot inland sites.
- Gate width: at least 48 inches clear.
- Sand or soft dirt: we set the unit on plywood so it stays level.
- Windy sites: we stake or strap the unit to a fixed post.
- Locked sites: give us the gate code; jobsite units can take your padlock on a hasp.

Standard porta potty questions
Does a standard porta potty have a sink?
No. A standard unit has a hand-sanitizer dispenser, not a sink. If you need running water for hand washing, add a two-sided hand-washing station or choose the flushing unit with a sink inside.
Can a standard porta potty be locked?
Yes. Every unit has an inside latch. Jobsite units can be fitted with a padlock hasp on request, and you supply the lock. Give us a key or code so the service technician can get in each week.
Does it smell?
A clean, serviced unit has little odor. The tank holds a blue deodorizer, and the vent stack pulls air up and out. Odor grows when the tank gets full or sits in strong sun, so shade and on-time service matter most.
How much water does a standard porta potty use?
None. A standard unit does not flush and needs no water or power hookup. Waste goes into the 60-gallon holding tank, which we pump out on each service visit.
How many rolls of toilet paper come with it?
Each standard unit is stocked with two rolls of toilet paper and a full sanitizer dispenser. We restock both on every service visit. For a busy event, ask for extra rolls left on site.
